Tilgang til de fleste vitenskapelige artikler koster penger. Slike som meg, som gjør helt uavhengig forskning, gjerne på kjøkkenet og gutterommet, har ikke alltid midler til dette.

Bayh-Dole Act fra 1980 i USA tillater institusjoner som motter statlige forskningsmidler å ta patent på forskningen sin, og lease ut patentrettigheter til eksterne firmaer. Dette har blitt en stor industri i USA.

Også i Norge må man ofte betale for å lese universitetsstudier. Resultatene kan ofte patenteres av universitetet. Selv om universitetene er finansiert av skattepengene våre. Vi må altså først betale lønnen til de som forsker, deretter må vi betale for å lese det de kommer frem til. Rimelig? sci-hub er en tjeneste som omgår dette. Jeg hørte om sci-hub første gangen fra Amber O’Hearn i et youtube intervju med Paul Saladino.

Sci-hub er muligens ulovlig. For sikkerhets skyld er det lurt å bruke en VPN, eller Tor nettverket, dersom man aksesserer tjenesten.

Idag hørte jeg Lex Fridman podcast episode 307 der han intervjuet Coinbase grunnlegger Brian Armstrong. 2 timer og 10 minutter ut i intervjuet var tema korrupsjonen av vitenskapelige tidsskrift. Forskere sender inn sine forskningsrapporter til tidsskrifter som Nature, Lancet, BMJ og mange andre. Tidsskriftene lar tredjeparter lese igjennom. Hvis fagfellevurderingen går bra publiserer de. På internett legger de forskningen bak betalingsmurer som ofte er dyre, anslagsvis 50 dollar, ofte mer. Dermed er ikke forskningen tilgjengelig for folk flest. Selv om forskerne ofte lønnes over statsbudsjettet, som igjen er finansiert av skattebetalerne. Armstrong har startet et initiativ ResearchHub.com som søker å endre dette. Her kan man publisere samt også få tilbakemeldinger fra andre forskere.
